Now listen to the audio instructions. After some initial practice which is not supplied in text form here, you will hear two scenarios for which you can use the French and English text below.

Scenario 1: Asking for Directions
Imagine you are in an unfamiliar city and you are supposed to meet someone at a café. You’re lost and you see someone who has a map of the city and a mobile phone. You need help and you wish to look at that person’s map and you wish to use their phone to warn your friend that you will be late. How would you approach this person?

Vous : Excusez-moi, Monsieur, mais je suis un peu perdue et je cherche le café La Boussole. Est- ce que vous le connaissez ? Le monsieur : Non, je suis désolé. Vous : Est-ce que ça vous dérangerait si je regar- de votre carte une petite minute s’il vous plaît ? Le monsieur : Non, bien sûr, je vous en prie ! Vous : Merci ! Aussi, est-ce que je pourrais utiliser votre téléphone deux petites secondes pour appe- ler mon ami qui m'attend ? Le monsieur : Allez-y ! Vous : Merci beaucoup, Monsieur ! C’est très gentil !!

English Version:
You: Excuse me, Sir, but I’m a bit lost and I’m looking for le café La Boussole* – do you know it ?
The man: No, I’m sorry. You: Would you mind if I looked at your map for just a minute please? The man: Of course not, here you go!
You: Thank you! could I use your telephone 2 seconds to call my friend who is waiting for me?
The man: Go ahead! You: Thank you very much, Sir! That’s very kind!
Note: You might hear ‘Je vous en prie’ in different situations! It is usually said to express ‘You’re wel- come’ when someone has said ‘Thank you’, but it can also be used to express ‘Please’ or ‘Here you go’. If you’re waiting in line at the supermarket and someone wants to offer you to go in front of them, they might say to you, ‘Je vous en prie !’

Scenario 2: Christmas Shopping
C’est la période de Noël et vous faites des achats dans les magasins. Voici deux petits jeux de rôle qui utilisent les formules de politesse. Ecoutez-les et apprenez à former ces questions et à les utiliser dans votre vie !
La situation : vous êtes dans un magasin et vous voulez acheter un manteau pour votre femme comme cadeau de Noël. Avant de l’acheter, vous voulez poser quelques questions à la vendeuse.
Vous : Excusez-moi, Madame ! La vendeuse : Oui, Monsieur. Vous : J’aimerais acheter un manteau pour ma femme et j’ai quelques questions. La vendeuse : Oui, allez-y, je vous écoute. Vous : Je pense que ce manteau serait chouette pour ma femme mais je ne sais pas si la taille est bonne. Serait-il possible de l’échanger ou d’avoir un remboursement si ça ne va pas bien ? La vendeuse : Oui, il faut garder le ticket de caisse et le ramener dans les 30 jours après la vente. Vous : D’accord, merci ! Excusez-moi mais j’ai une autre demande. Est-ce que ça vous dérangerait de l’essayer ? Vous avez, je pense, la même taille que ma femme ! La vendeuse : Oui, pas de problème. Je vais l’es- sayer. Qu’en pensez-vous ? Vous : Oui, il me semble bien ! Merci ! Je vais le prendre. La vendeuse : Très bien. Vous : Est-ce que vous pourriez faire un paquet- cadeau s’il vous plaît ? La vendeuse : Bien sûr, Monsieur ! Vous : Pourriez-vous aussi me donner une carte de visite du magasin ? La vendeuse : La voici ! Vous : Merci de votre aide. C’est très gentil ! La vendeuse : Je vous en prie et je vous souhaite un Joyeux Noël ! Vous : Bon Noël à vous aussi !

English Version:
It's the Christmas season and you are shop- ping. Here are two short simulations that in- corporate some standard polite expressions. Listen to them and try to make them part of your everyday vocabulary.
The Setting: You are in a store and you would like to buy an overcoat for your wife as a Christ- mas present. Before making the purchase, you want to ask the salesperson a few questions.
You: Excuse me, Madam ! The saleswoman: Yes, Sir. You: I would like to buy a coat for my wife and I have a few questions. The saleswoman: Yes, go-ahead, I’m listening. You: I think this coat would be very nice for my wife, but I’m not sure if the size is right. Would it be possible to exchange it or to get a reimbursement if it doesn’t suit her? The saleswoman: Yes, you must keep the receipt and bring it back within 30 days after the sale.
You: OK, thank you! I’m sorry, but I have another request. Would you mind trying it on? I think you are the same size as my wife.
The saleswoman: Yes, no problem. I’ll try it on. What do you think? You: Yes, it seems OK! Thank you! I’ll take it.
The saleswoman: Very well. You: Could you gift wrap it, please?
The saleswoman: Of course, Sir. You: Could you also give me the store’s business card? The saleswoman: Here you go! You: Thank you for your help. It’s very kind! The saleswoman: You’re welcome and I wish you a Merry Christmas! You: Merry Christmas to you, too!
